If the number of people who lined up to attend the Google Masterclass at the Internet World @ Earl’s Court has a story to tell, it is this. The internet is not growing, it is EXPLODING!
Web 3.0 is around the corner and the implications are diverse and real. Here are some pointers:
- Web access is getting faster and more accessible from handheld devices.
- The e-consumer is becoming smarter and asking the right questions.
- Brand engagement is not a challenge, but a must for long term survival.
- Intranet will give way to Extranet.
- Mobile search is in, web search is passé!
- Behavioral targeting is in and demographic targeting is out.
- Online models will go offline.
- M-Commerce will eventually bypass e-commerce.
- Wireless applications and devices will seamlessly integrate.
- 'Virolicty' - Word of Mouse is the new mantra, Word of Mouth is a mouthful!
There was one common denominator in all the success stories coming out this past year. Social networking sites are claiming victory. Whether it is Facebook or YouTube, My Space or LinkedIn, they all registered an average 50% growth, month on month. Online advertising is still the main revenue model of most social networking sites. The difference is that they offer behavioral targeting and not just plain demographic targeting.
The financial success of networking sites is still a big question mark. If they are not successful, they won’t let us know and if they are hugely successful that won’t tell! I guess end of the day, you have to put your money where your ‘mouse is’.
If you think the internet is a passing fad, try living without it for 3 straight days. If you live to survive, it will only be to head to a rehab centre. No wonder Betty Clinic is not admitting any more patients!
